http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Axel-Witsel-c7029 has mocked Zenit after their latest draw and has assured the fans of better performances in the Russian Premier League and European campaign next season
Defending Russian Premier League champions, Zenit St. Petersburg, failed to retain the league title this season, after surrendering 1-1 against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Rostov-c39192 in what was a crucial league encounter at Rostov-on-don on Sunday.
The St. Petersburg club were trailing CSKA Moscow by just three points and a win followed by the Moscow-based club’s defeat against Lokomotiv Moscow at Lokomotiv stadium on Sunday could have leveled them on points at the top of
the league table.
However, Luciano Spalletti’s men failed to find consistency in their performances following their draw against the Selmashi on the away turf. Though the Meshki managed to score the opening goal of the match, they conceded the equaliser
through penalty spot late in the game.
As things stand, they are at the second spot on the league table with 58 points and trailing the Moscow-based club by massive five points with only one game remaining until the end of the ongoing campaign.
Axel Witsel, who joined the Russian outfit for a record breaking 40 million Euro from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/SL-Benfica-c40542 last year, has lamented Zenit’s latest draw against 12th placed Rostov and criticized his own team-mates for not taking
the championship seriously.
“I think we should have killed the game after scoring the second goal but we missed it and are reaping benefits from it at the moment. I think we were not playing offensive football and that this is the main reason behind dropping
points.
“I was lucky to score. I wanted to hit harder, but the ball hit the grass and bounced into the net. Scoring a goal is always a nice feeling but I did not feel team spirit in the match and we have to work on it,” The Belgian International
was quoted as saying.
The 24-year-old midfielder went on to assure the fans of coming back stronger next season and told them that they will also work harder to reach the later stages of the UEFA Champions League competition next season.
