Wladimir Klitschko scheduled to defend his titles against Tony Thompson for second time - Boxing News
Wladimir Klitschko, the current WBO and IBO heavyweight champion, is scheduled to defend his titles for the second time against Tony Thompson, the former WBO Intercontinental heavyweight champion, in a 12-round skirmish on July 7, 2012.
The announcement was made by Lindsey Tucker, chairman IBF championship committee who officially announced the engagement after the settlement of the bout’s terms and conditions between the two parties.
According to the details, Tucker received a letter of consent from both parties mentioning that they have agreed upon a deal unanimously and will not be requiring the mandatory purse settlement moot which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday March 27,
2012.
This will be the 12th time that the world number one heavyweight will defend his long list of titles. Wladimir, the proud Ukrainian pounder currently has five apex heavyweight titles round his waist.
The recently turned 36 Wladimir proudly holds the World Boxing Organisation, International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association (Super), International Boxing Organisation and Ring Magazine heavyweight titles.
This will be the second time that Tony and Wladimir will meet in the ring. In their first encounter Tony strived hard to snatch the titles off the ‘Dr. Steelhammer’. But all his efforts went in vain as Wladimir authoritatively nailed him in the 11th round
via knockout.
Since then Tony has obliterated five men in continuity and became eligible again for a title shot. Wladimir, has been in a total 60 bouts and came out victorious in 57. The orthodox pounder has collected 50 of his wins by knockout and recently nailed Jean-Marc
Mormeck to successfully defend his gold.
Tony, on the other hand, also has an impressive resume but when compared to Wladimir, the American ‘Tiger’ is seriously outclassed. Thompson has been in a total 38 bouts and came out victorious in 36. He has collected 24 of his total wins by knockout and
interestingly collected all of his last five wins via technical knockout.
Shelly Finkel, advisor Wladimir, while shedding some light on the current scenario, said, “There is no purse bid because we made a deal.” According to further details, if a purse bid moot was to be convened, Wladimir would have been awarded 85 percent of
the win amount with the remaining 15 percent going to Tony.
The ring for the event will be stretched at Stade de Suisse Wankdorf arena situated in Bern, Canton of Bern, Switzerland and the show will be televised by ‘Epix’, the media icon who also broadcasted Wladimir’s skirmish with Jean.
