Wladimir Klitschko to defend titles against Tony Thompson for the second time – Boxing News
Wladimir Klitschko, the current WBO, WBA super world, IBF, and IBO heavyweight champion, will defend his titles again in a rematch against arch rival Tony Thompson, the former WBO Intercontinental heavyweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held
on July 7, 2012.
This will be the second time that the duo will take on each other in an attempt to end their feud once and for all. In the first meeting, it was Wladimir who emerged out victorious by collecting an eleventh round knockout win.
Since then Tony has built himself an impressive five-bout win streak to reclaim the number one contender spot. Thompson is widely known as the only man in Wladimir’s hefty career who gave a tough time to the number one heavyweight in the world.
The duo recently met at a pre-bout press conference and shared their thoughts about the bout. Tony adopted a humble and down-to-earth stance whereas this time it was Wladimir who got a bit sarcastic while recalling his previous experience with Tony.
Also known as ‘Steelhammer’, Wladimir has been in a total of 60 bouts and recently grabbed his 50th knockout win by pummelling Jean Marc Mormeck in the fourth round of the 12-round bout.
In his long illustrious career Wladimir has lost just three bouts and interestingly all three via knockout. While sharing his thoughts Wladimir punned Tony and commented, “I just want to know today if you're healthy this time going into this fight, no issues...nothing
that could affect your performance on Saturday? I just want to make that clear so this doesn't happen again after the fight. So we're clear, we're clean, we're healthy, and we're entering the fight? Fantastic!”
Tony, who entered the ring last time with a meniscus injury, after losing the bout, remarked that he would have won the bout but the injury hampered his performance. It is this reason, why Wladimir taunted the American proud and assured that this time Tony
does not have any injury in order to generate an excuse.
Thompson will enter his career’s 39th bout and will try to avenge his former loss. While sharing his thoughts Tony stated, “We're not going to spit on each other...we're not going to talk too much trash. I want my performance to do my talking for me. I've
trained very hard for this fight and I want the world to know that my time has come.”
Tony and Wladimir will meet at Stade de Suisse situated in Berne, Switzerland and the event is being promoted by Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions.
