Wladimir Klitschko wants Chisora as Khan goes to Vegas
Yet again we are reminded at the dearth in quality in the heavyweight division as Wladimir Klitschko looks towards Derek Chisora as his next opponent.
Don’t get me wrong, Chisora has done well so far; maybe not as good as he would like to believe, but he’s got talent. Yet he has only had 14 fights. He is improving in every fight but there is no way at the moment he could deal with that blockbusting, robotic left jab of Klitschko.
In his last fight against Sam Sexton, Chisora looked strong, powerful and he has got very good movement for a big guy. In fact his head bobbing is almost Joe Frazier-like at times, obviously he’s not at "Smokin’ Joe’s" level yet, but he is a very good prospect, if he takes his time to learn.
If “Del Boy” heads off to Germany now he can expected to get grinded down and flattened in 10 or jabbed to bits in 12 rounds. It’s similar to America’s Eddie Chambers, who looked a good prospect until “Dr Steelhammer” got to him.
Del Boy needs to be patient, although that word is probably not in his vocabulary. The man would love nothing more than to step in the ring with Klitschko or David Haye but it’s a fine line between being a potential contender to discarded, defeated rival. One loss to Klitschko and Chisora is on the scrap heap; if you aren’t a competitor to a Klitschko or have been defeated by one your career in the heavyweights is effectively over.
Talk was about the Londoner being given a shot at Nicolay Valuev and that would be a good shout because he is similar to Klitschkos in his style, ie they are both massive. Other than that he should try and win the EBU title first and maybe get a fight or two in against an experienced pro like Tony Thompson, Chris Arrolea, Albert Sosnowski or even Evander Holyfield. Then look towards one of the Ukrainian giants.
Elsewhere fellow British star Amir Khan has confirmed his super-fight with Marcos Maidana will take place in Las Vegas on the December 11th.
This promises to be a great match-up and the biggest challenge of Khan’s career. Go on any boxing forum on the internet and there will be people questioning Khan’s chin. They have scope for a case as the former Olympian has been dropped by the likes of Michael Gomez, Willie Limond and, of course, Breidis Prescott. However most fighters do get dropped at some stage of their career and maybe it’s all hype over nothing? Maidana will prove it one-way or another as he is the best puncher in the light-welterweights and he will certainly be testing Khan’s chin with his heavy fists.
It’s a brave and gutsy move by Khan proving that some fighters do want to step up to the biggest challenge. Khan’s last fight against Paulie Malignaggi was a welcome to America number for a new audience. Malignaggi was tailor-made for him to showcase his skills, now the WBA champ must step up to the next level with the Argentinian KO specialist.
It’s a shame for his British fans that the fight couldn’t be in the UK but apparently all the major venues were booked up around that time and he will probably return home for his fight after as British boxing continues to conquer the world.
