Wladimir Klitschko’s manager not underestimating Derek Chisora
While most of the world may be willing to underestimate Derek Chisora in his upcoming December 11 heavyweight title fight with champion Wladimir Klitschko, Klitschko’s manager is not.
Bernd Boente told boxingscene.com that Chisora, a British heavyweight prospect with only 14 professional fights, is a dangerous opponent his fighter can’t afford to take lightly.
The venue for the fight, to be determined, will be in Germany. If Chisora wins he is automatically guaranteed a shot at older brother Vitali Klitschko’s WBC heavyweight title.
Boente demonstrated that Chisora was a formidable opponent by saying: “When [Alexander] Povetkin got a chance to fight for the first time for the championship belt [against Klitschko], his record only had 15 fights. And let’s not forget that Leon Spinks
beat Muhammad Ali, with only having a total of eight bouts to his credit. Therefore, it is reasonable to argue that Chisora is a dangerous opponent who cannot be underestimated.”
On many British fans’ minds is the fact that Chisora accepted a fight with champion Klitschko when British champion David Haye would not. The fact seems already to be separating English fans based on the fighters with whom they lend their support. Boente
commented on the distinction, saying: “Haye is interesting because has a belt, but he is afraid to get in the ring against a Klitschko. As Chisora publicly stated [...] he has no fear of Wladimir. And it's not the money, despite the fact that Haye is constantly
referring to that. We asked him to share the total income with a 50-50 [agreement], but he didn't want to."
Klitschko is coming off a solid tenth round knockout of contender Samuel Peter. For most of the fight Klitschko swept the canvas with Peter, connecting with rights and hooks almost at will when he chose to attack. Many anticipate Chisora, despite his modest
record, will have more steam in the long run than Peter against Klitschko.
