  1. Apply for a B2 (tourist visa) at the embassy or one of the consulates.  The application fee is $131.

Still, there's no guarantee you'll be given the full six months.  That will be determined by the CBP Officer at the port of entry when you actually arrive.

  2. B2 Visa will allow you to stay upto 6 months in US as long as you get I-94 of 6 months duration at the Port of Entry.

  3. You could come to the US for 90 days and while here apply for a 90 day extension, but I would try for an appointment w/ the embassy in London.  Show them your suggested itinerary (staying w/ this relative in NY for 2 weeks, then that friend in Chicago), show that you have a home and a job waiting for you in the UK, and show the bank statements that prove you can support yourself while here.

The biggest thing is to convince them that you plan to leave at the end of your vacation.
