Wolfgang Gerz, Brett Beyer lead respective divisions on Day 2: 2012 Laser World Masters Championship
Former Finn World Champion, Germany’s Wolfgang Gerz and Australia’s Brett Beyer put up an excellent sailing performance on the second day of 2012 Laser World Masters Championship at the Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Queensland. The pair grabbed the lead of Standard
Grand Masters Division and Standard Masters Division respectively.
The weather condition on the Queensland waters was quite different than those of on Day 1. The winds were very cooperative as they blew around moderately from 11 to 18 knots over the race course which helped the sailors to complete the scheduled races of
second day perfectly.
Gerz was impressive on the Aussie waters and compiled a bullet and a second podium finish in the two scheduled races to hit the top spot. Martinie Andre, who led the fleet on the first day, had no chance to make an appearance and retain his good results
to keep the lead. He tumbled down on the third spot.
Meanwhile, Brett Beyer began his Day 2 campaign impressively with a couple of stunning bullet finishes. He is on the top podium with five points after six races, including a discard. With five points difference between him and Bradley Taylor, the first day
leader, is on the second position at 10 points. On the other hand, Sean Atherton-Feeney of Australia is currently placed on third spot.
Speaking to the local media at the end of Day 2, Beyer said, “I had two good starts; I stayed left of most of the fleet all day. In race 4 particularly I made good gains on the first beat going well to the left corner and was comfortably ahead at the top
mark, and I extended downwind.”
In other divisions of the regatta, the Laser Radial sailor from New Zealand, Scott Leith managed to claim the lead of Laser Radial Apprentice Division compiling a pair of bullets. He replaced the first-day leaderboard, Richard Bott from Australia who slipped
down on Number 2 position.
Leith spoke to the media, “I started this regatta a little slowly. I capsized on the first day at the bottom mark. I had a mainsheet wrap on the boom and while trying to free it I went in. But today was much better. My first race start was OK and the second
one was good.”
The event has been producing outstanding sailing competitions so far and it will get more exciting until the end.
