Wolfgang Niersbach certain to take over DFB presidency from Theo Zwanziger - Germany News
The German Football Federation is about to welcome a new president, following the end of Theo Zwanziger era as the DFB president. Niersbach is certain to take over from the current president after the 66-year-old decided not to fight for the seat again.
Niersbach told that he would relish this opportunity to rule the federation and ensure that the German football stays on the right track. He was of the view that his experience would prove handful for this job and was delighted to have been nominated as
Zwanziger’s successor.
The current general secretary showed gratitude to the fans and officials who voted for his appointment and assured of fulfilling his responsibilities successfully.
He confessed that he always reserved respect for this seat and was confident of ruling the federation some day.
Niersbach also credited Zwanziger with his appointment, as he supported him all the way through and helped him learn a lot during his four-year presidential career.
While talking to DFB’s official website, the to-be president further enthused:
"I have the utmost respect for this office. I realise what a big step it means for me personally. My advantage is certainly that I have been involved in football for nearly 40 years and have come to know the DFB and all its facets over the last 20 years.
I trust myself to the task because I feel the widespread support. I've always been a team player, this will not change anything."
The current president also congratulated his successor and wished him luck for the new journey, which will begin next year.
He assured Niersbach of his full support and, at the same time, hoped that the German national side performs well in Europe during the upcoming Euro 2012.
Zwanziger concluded by saying:
“I had hoped for him to be my successor in 2010, but back then he was not yet ready. He has my full support."
Zwanziger took up the presidency in 2007 after serving as co-president for one year.
