German Football Association President, Wolfgang Niersbach, believes his side still has a lot to do to win the European championship.
Die Mannschaft were placed in a tricky group, which included the likes of Portugal, Denmark and Netherlands. Despite being in a tough group, Germany were tipped to dethrone Spain.
Joachim Low’s men so far have been the most in-form side; they won all three of their ‘Group B’ fixtures. Their performances against A Seleccao and the Dutch showed how astute the side is tactically. They were able to grind out
a result against Paulo Bento’s team, and ripped open the Oranje defence with their attacking prowess.
On the back of three straight victories, now DFB eleven are bookies’ favourites at 3.30/1 to win the 2012 European championship. The German FA’s president however, has a different opinion. He states that even though his side has
collected maximum points from their group, but there were moments when they looked nervy and shaky.
"Three wins, and three times that we were shuddering. We've been trembling a lot, but it went well,” he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Germany, who are through to the next round, face Greece in the quarter-finals. For Wolfgang Joachim Low’s side will be the favourites when they face Fernando Santo’s but he would not bet his house on them clinching the title.
"We have to assume the role of favourites against Greece, but I'd argue that we're not the big favourites for the tournament.” he added.
One thing in particular that bothers the DFB supremo is the lack of goals, as the Germans have only managed to find the net five times in three matches. Wolfgang is hoping they have saved up the goals for the quarter finals, and
will start scoring at will; like they have been in the past.
"I hope that this team has been saving up their goals for the quarter-finals," he further added.
Die Mannschaft however, will be quietly confident of getting a good result against Greece. Despite playing like they did in 2004’s European Championship, Fernando Santos’s side will not be able to contain the Germans, who possess
enough quality in their ranks to go past a plucky Greek side.
