Wolfsburg boss says club can finish in top five of Bundesliga
Wolfsburg manager Steve McClaren insists that he can help his side stop the rot and achieve their goal of a finish in the top five of the Bundesliga this season.
The 2008-09 champions have struggled so far this season. Despite boasting the talents of players such as Edin Dzeko and Edinaldo Batista Libanio Grafite, they have claimed just 13 points from 11 games to leave them in 12th place in the table — 15 points behind
leaders Borussia Dortmund but just five behind fifth-placed Hoffenheim.
Despite poor form in the early stages of the season, McClaren said that the club can transform their fortunes to achieve a top-five finish.
He told the club’s official website that: “The target we had set ourselves for the season is not yet out of reach. We want to finish in the top five. We can’t afford to begin feeling sorry for ourselves now though, there are still plenty of points to be won
in November.
'Other teams are struggling'
"The past has also taught us that a lot is possible in the second half of the season. Many other teams are also having difficulties right now and are not playing consistently.
"There is a great deal of frustration and disappointment within the team at the moment. We are very disappointed and we need to do something about it. I’m expecting the lads to react accordingly – both in training and in the game."
Wolfsburg have lost three of their last four games in the Bundesliga, having been defeated 3-2 by Bayer Leverkusen at home, 2-1 by Nurnburg and 3-1 by Eintracht in their last match. However, they defeated Stuttgart 2-0 on 30 October.
Their next game will be on Saturday, 13 November, against Schalke who, despite playing the UEFA Champions League this season, are languishing in 16th place.
