Wolves end 29-match winning streak of Manchester United
Bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers ended Manchester United’s 29-match unbeaten streak. The Wolves beat United 2-1 at the Molineux, after United had gained the lead through Nani in the third minute of the match.
Despite Wolves sitting at the bottom, it guaranteed to be a difficult trip for United as the Wolves had better of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Manchester City at their home. With Arsenal slipping points against Newcastle United, a win could have sent United
seven points clear at the top.
The Red Devils were without centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 were at their full
strength, with Stephen Hunt as the only absentee.
United had a wonderful start in the third minute when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nani-c27299 scored a trademark goal, after cutting inside from the right, and fired in a thunder strike past Wayne Hennessey’s near post. United came close to another shortly when Dimitar
Berbatov played a superb flick to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 but only for the latter to hit it straight in the keeper’s gloves.
Wolves levelled on the 10th minute mark when Matt Jarvis crossed to George Elokobi after a quickly taken corner and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cameroon-c2865 international flicked in the header to level the scoring. That was really clever thinking from the Wolves,
taking advantage of the gaps United had left.
United dominated the first 25 minutes, but for the rest of the half, it was all Wolves. Jamie O’Hara came close to double the lead for Wolves when his low drive was kneed away by Edwin Van Der Sar for a corner. Moments later, a Nenad
Milijas free kick deflected just wide with Van Der Sar stranded.
Wolves took the lead in the 40th minute when Milijas’s left-footed delivery was headed in by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kevin-Doyle-c20719 past diving Van Der Sar. The Wolves set piece threat was poorly met by United; leaving them staring at their first defeat of the season.
Second Half started with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Carrick-c25282; who had a poor first half. Despite United dominating the possession, they could not create any opportunities to test the Wolves keeper.
Alex Ferguson once again turned to Javier Hernandez, United’s late saviour on many occasions this season. Unfortunately for United, he could not work his magic this time around. United’s desperation was evident, as Scholes was booked for
handling the ball rather than heading it past Hennessey.
United continued pushing for the equalizer but the resolute defence of Mick McCarthy’s men maintained their organization and ended their unbeaten run. United remain on top despite the defeat but their poor run of away forms threw the title
race back open.
