Wolves v Aston Villa - First Half Report
The Super Sunday’s 2nd match of the English Premier League was scheduled between Wolves and Aston Villa. Gerard Houllier’s side went into the half time with one goal to the good 1-0 away from home.
Let us head towards the action that took place on the pitch. It was a bright start by Villa with Marc Albrighton seeing a bit of the ball out wide on the right and getting in a decent early cross that Marcus Hahnemann had to deal with. Wolves still seemed
to be settling down.
Soon there was better play from them as after a decent spell of pressure, Kevin Doyle slid David Edwards clear on the right hand side of the area with a precise pass. The Welshman was clean through but he could not find the target - his shot sliced wide.
There was some more pressure from Wolves with Stephen Ward's long throws giving Villa problems. The home side was also playing some probing balls into the area from either flank.
But then, it was Villa's turn to threaten as Nigel Reo-Coker ran to the edge of the area before being crowded by a group of Wolves’ defenders, who hustled him off the ball. Then, Marc Albrighton whipped in a cross from the right that found Emile Heskey unmarked
at the far post. He couldn’t control the ball or divert it goal-wards but to be fair, it was quite a difficult chance.
There was the first yellow card of the match when Stephen Warnock slid in on David Edwards and got more of the man than the ball. Meanwhile, the action continued and David Jones curled in the resulting free-kick but it flew straight through to Brad Friedel.
Albrighton went for the goal himself from a distance but fired straight at Marcus Hahnemann. Then came the first and only goal of the half. Albrighton made the goal with a wicked cross from the right that got behind the Wolves’ defense and was met by Stewart
Downing, who ran in at the back stick to hammer it home. It was simple but devastatingly effective by the visitors.
Wolves seemed to be working hard and although, Kevin Doyle was a willing and able front-man but still they weren’t really knocking on Villa's door as they went looking for an equalizer. They could not create a shooting chance.
Ashley Young switched to the right flank for Villa and made an immediate impact, cutting in to fire wide with a rasping shot. That wasn't far away.
Aston Villa continued to dominate until the first half whistle blew. The manager Houllier would have been pleased with the first 45 minutes of being in charge of Aston Villa in the Premier League after a recent win in the Carling Cup.
