  1. Autopsy showed she died of hitting her head. The fish didn't hurt her.

  2. Is it possible? Yes. Stingrays have been known to jump into boats before. Did it sting her to death? Pretty unlikely. The stingray's barb is just that, a barb. Unless it pierced a vital organ, it's really unlikely that she died from being "stung" by a stingray. There is I guess a possibility of an allergic reaction that could have killed her.

With the odds of #1 a stingray jumping in her boat,#2 the stingray actually "stinging" her, #3 Her being pieced in a deadly place, and #4 the possibility of being allergic to a stingray, She really should have played the lottery instead of going boating that day. She had better odds with the lottery.

  3. More than possible. The barb actually pierced her neck.

  4. Steve Irwin

  5. Marvin - yes, rays CAN leap out of the water.

  6. the sting did not kill her, when she fell and cracked her skull that killed her.

  7. Various kinds of rays can jump out of the water and it has happened more than once that a person in a boat was seriously injured or even killed by one.  As another poster said though, not usually by the sting, but by the impact or by the fall.

  8. actually, she died of massive head trauma. Not from being "stung". The coroner just released the report. Never the less, it's still a tragedy, and a freak accident.

  9. Rays are often seen flying from the water and slapping back down.  It is quite a sight.  This was not a sting ray but an eagle ray.  No barb.

  10. Marvin, it is possible.  I live in Florida and I have seen manta rays (much larger than eagle rays) jumping out of the water.

  11. Very possible.

  12. they cannot jump

  13. I am in flordia, amazing how stories get knocked out of proportion.  The lady died because the sting ray jumped out of the water, and hit her while they were driving 35mph. If you were driving 35mph and someone threw a 75 lb wieght that hit you in the chest you woudl die too. And for the recoerd eagle rays, do jump out of the water, to avoid predators. This actually happened a few years ago but the guy did not die, only twice that i heard of....people were just lucky i guess.
