  1. yes. i thought everybody knew this?

a number of women tried out to be astronuts back in teh days of mercury, and did well. but nasa said no f**king way, engineered the requirements to exclude women, and gemini and apollo were for boys only.

women have flown on the shuttle, mir and iss. not because nasa were being nice, but bcuz nixon had signed an act mandating equal employment opportunity in all aspects of the federal government. that included nasa, who had to allow women or lose federal funding, something like 99.99% of their budget.

  2. My local Astronomy Club, The Custer Institute, did not even allow women to be members until the 70's.

Today we have a woman president :)

  3. Get with it girl.  Only 12 men walked the moon, and that ended 36 years ago.

If the moon shots were done today, no doubt women would be included in the selection, but back then, they generally took military men, test pilots mainly, and back then they were all men.

Are you under the impression moon landings go on all the time (that would make a nice change from all the crackpots who say the moon landings didn’t happen at all)?  Go to Wikipedia and read about Apollo missions.

  4. No woman has landed on the moon.  Only 12 astronauts (all men) have landed on the moon all between 1969 and 1972.

Until the mid-80's, the US didn't allow women in the space program.

The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova (Russian) in 1963.  The first woman to walk in space was Svetlana Savitskaya (Russian) in 1982.

The first American woman in space was Sally Ride in 1983.  The first American woman to walk in space was Kathryn Sullivan in 1984.

  5. There hasn't been ANYONE on the moon since Apollo 17 which was launched and concluded 36 years ago.

Americans -- all men -- landed on the moon six times between 1969 and '72 -- that is it. No women because all astronauts were men in those days. The gender part has changed now, but we don't go to the moon any more because there is insufficient motive, interest or funding to do so.

  6. The only flights to land anyone on the moon took place in 1969-1972. At that time the selection criteria for astronauts was primarily based on test pilot and miltary flight expertise, with the exception of a group of scientist astronauts. It was simply the case that the professions from which astronauts were drawn in those days had no women in them.

  7. Only 12 people have landed on the moon and those where all in the later 60's and early 70's. At that time NASA was a very male dominated organization. The first female US astronauts where not selected until 1978 and the first one to fly was Sally Ride in 1983.

  8. No-one has walked on the Moon since Eugene Cernan of Apollo 17 in December 1972. All the Apollo astronauts were men.

There have been lots of women in space since then, so when we return to the Moon there is a very good chance there will be some female astronauts going there.

  9. The only woman who has EVER had a chance of landing on the moon was Alice Kramden, from the old TV show "The Honeymooners".  Jackie Gleason, who portrayed Ralph Kramden, was regularly "threatening" his wife, Alice (played by Audrey Meadows) that "One of these days, Alice, one of these days . . . POW!!! To the Moon!!" or "Bang! Zoom! To the Moon!"

Not too long ago, I saw a cartoon, where a pair of astronauts were VERY surprised to stumble upon her dessicated corpse on the lunar surface.

But in real life, no woman was an astronaut during the period of the Lunar Landings, because no woman had ever been a military test pilot.  The requirements for becoming an astronaut changed later, and then women qualified to go into space.

  10. Exactly 6 men have been on the Moon.  That's seven attempts with two men each, with one failure to reach the Moon.  NASA flies women on the Space Shuttle, and on the international space station, and has had a women mission commander and shuttle pilot.  Despite early claims from the Soviets, women appear to be easily as capable as men for astronaut duty.

The next batch of astronauts that will make it to the moon are likely being trained right now.  It takes a very special kind of person to go into space.  You have to be smart enough to be able to do the mission.  This is pretty smart.  I suggest starting with an engineering degree.  But you have to be dumb enough to actually go.  In my opinion, this should rule out everyone who was smart enough.  Yet there is no shortage of volunteers.

Cosmic rays and high energy radiation can cause genetic mutation, causing cancer and other problems.  Until this is solved, i'm not willing to go until i'm at least 80.  At that point, a one way trip to the Moon or Mars might be justifiable.
