Women, how do we rise against these situations?

My good friend Jana Lynne Mackey was murdered over the holiday weekend by her ex-boyfriend. She was trying to end the relationship, and he couldn't handle it. He shot her to death, then fled to New Jersey where he was caught and hung himself in his jail cell.

This man had a history of violence, and had tried to stab another ex-girlfriend who was breaking up with him a few years ago. He spent some time in jail, but was back on the streets in no time.

None of us knew about his past. What can we as women do to prevent these situations? Jana was a sweet, intelligent law student who worked as an advocate for battered women. How does someone like that end up in this situation? What can we do?

  1. Always break up with someone while in a crowd.  Having witnesses is a plus. Especially if you suspect a problem.

  2. You should always avoid a man who is too possessive or controlling. Usually they disguise this as flattery in the beginning but it is a sign of an oppressive boyfriend.

Also, women should look at how he treats others. He may be really sweet at first but if he's rude to his parents and friends, that's how he'll treat you too eventually.

Unfortunately though love is blind and some woman have a hard time seeing their crush's potential violence.

I hope the government in your area can toughen anti-stalking and anti-violence laws in the wake of this tragedy. My condolences.

  3. Women should start looking into a man's past, it tells a story. His story or history. We/I've been doing it for years. Which women were trying to tell me that a person past doesn't/shouldn't matter.  How wrong is that. I will always look into a woman's past to see her story. It saves lives and heart aches.
