Question:

Women's Pensions question ?

I believe Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) came into force in April 1978. This was introduced in order to protect the Basic State Pension of women when they retire by ensuring that full National Insurance contributions were still paid when the woman left work to bring up a child.

A woman only gets HRP if she claims child benefit for the child. If she claimed child benefit for 19 years (the maximum length), then you knock off 19 years from the number of years a woman WOULD NORMALLY have to work to get a FULL basic state pension which is currently 39 years.

My question is, does anyone know whether a woman would get HRP if she worked part-time whilst claiming the child benefit but was only paying a reduced stamp for this work, or is it the case that you only get the protection if you claim child benefit and either don't work at all whilst bringing up the child or if you do you must pay the full stamp ?

  1. You really should tell us what state you are writing about. There is no context to answer your question.

  2. If you're a married woman or a widow, you can't get Home Responsibilities Protection for any complete tax year if you have chosen -

to pay reduced rate Class 1 National Insurance contributions as an employee (commonly known as the small stamp)
