Women's Sabre Individual and Team World Cup conclude in Belgium: Fencing Recap
Women’s Sabre Individual and Team World Cup concluded on June 12, at the Sports Hall Bourgoyen in Ghent, Belgium.
The Individual World Cup in Ghent is also named as the Challenge Yves Brasseur, which got its 6th edition held this weekend.
The Women's Sabre Individual World Cup commenced from June 10-11, whereas the Team World Cup took place on June 12, followed by a closing ceremony and prize distribution.
In the Individual event, a total of 165 senior women fencers took part. Sixteen of them were given an automatic bye into the top-64 direct elimination round. The rest of the participants were distributed into 22 pools, with first 19 pools included seven
individuals each, whereas the last three pools comprised of only six fencers each.
The top spot was sealed by the Italian Irene Vecchi after beating down Dagmara Wozniak of USA by 15-12 in the final bout.
Dagmara Wozniak won a silver medal which was her life’s fourth podium finish in her fencing career.
Earlier, in the quarter-finals, Wozniak succeeded to defeat the Ukrainian top star, Olga Kharlan, who is currently holding the World Number Two rank for the last two years.
It was amazing to find the US female sabreurs dominating the quarter-finals and later in the top-8 table, with three places sealed at second, third and sixth spots.
The third position was secured by Daria Schneider, who was also beaten down by Vecchi by a tremendous 15-8 score point. However, it was still quite an achievement for Schneider for receiving her career's first World Cup medal.
In addition to the US fencer, Ukraine’s Olena Khomrova, the 2010 World Cup medallist, also received the bronze-medal in the event after getting turned down by the talented American rising star, Wozniak.
Since 2008, it was Wozniak’s first World Cup in which she made it into the final bout and concluded the Individual competition with a tough fight with her opponent. However, she failed to clinch the gold medal.
In the Team World Cup, a total of 19 teams took part from various nations. Surprisingly, Russia defeated the Olympic winning team, Ukraine in the final bout by 45-40.
In the semi-final bout, Russia defeated Spain by a comfortable 45-36 score point difference, giving an unbeatable record in the World Cup.
On the other hand, the third position was secured by Italy by beating down the French team by a wide margin of 45-26.
