  1. Where are you located? I play in South Florida. There are different things done for different leagues . Do you want to play house or travel? For house you usually just have to be able to skate and somewhat play. But there may be a beginner league around that will welcome you.  For travel, you have to know how to play and that usually requires tryouts, practices and then the games.  E-mail me if you want some more information

  2. It really depends on where you're located.  In Canada, there are leagues for every shape, size, and age.  From young to old, male, female (even a few co-ed leagues).  Love watching the pensioners out there...they just look really cool and they're having a great time.

I saw something in the news about leagues starting up for beginners a few years ago.  Given that the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) has a large immigrant population, more than a few folks aren't natives and never skated or got into hockey; these leagues are serving that purpose.  No tryouts, no experience neeeded.

I have some friends in America who say there's something similar in the states; many rinks have skating tutorial programmes and run their own leagues.

If you want to play, you should be able to find something.  Internet searches are a good place to start.
