Women Epee Grand Prix starting in Havana today – Fencing Update
The Women Epee Grand Prix is set to begin in Havana from May 21-22 at the Pabexpo Exhibition Hall in Siboney, Playa.
The event will only feature the women epee individual event.
According to the Sports National Commission member Mercedes del Risco on May 10, a total of 73 participants from 25 different nations have registered their participation for the event and it is expected that many more entries will come up by the time is
gets commenced.
This event is being sponsored by the International Fencing Federation (FIE) and one of the officials reported that fencers from Australia, Azerbaijan, China, China Taipei, Dominican Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Israel and Holland are expected to show their
presence in the event.
Moreover, world’s finest female epeeist from Panama, Poland, Sweden, Japan, Switzerland, Tunisia, United States, Venezuela, Canada, Britain, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Ukraine, Germany and Romania will also be there at the event, displaying their skills
to the utmost.
The event will be a treat to watch the two fencers having the top two world rankings namely the Polish Magdalena Piekarska and the German Imke Duplitzer.
Moreover, a dozen of fencers will take part from Cuba and will be led by Yamilka Rodriguez and Zuleidis Ortiz, who are currently at the 27th and 25th World ranking respectively.
Ortiz had previously won a silver medal in the 2010 version of the World Cup in Havana, Cuba.
This Grand Prix will allow fencers to earn points for the next coming 2011 World Championships in Catania, Italy that is to take place from October 10-13.
National Commissioner of Sport, Rigoberto Morejon also told the media that the best fencers of the world will take part in the Grand Prix in order to improve their world ranking and enabling them to better their classification for the 2012 London Olympic
Games.
The schedule reveals that the first day of the event will comprise of the pool rounds that will be followed by the preliminary round until Top- 64 tableau.
The next day will continue the competition from the Direct Elimination Top-64 until the final round, followed by a prize distribution ceremony.
