Women Tennis: Russians wins all their matches on Day 3 – London Olympics 2012
Vera Zvonareva (13) trashed Francesca Schiavone
World number 13, Vera Zvonareva, thrashed the former French Open Champion, Francesca Schiavone, in the London Olympics second round match on the eve of Monday. She registered straight sets scores 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second stage
of the tournament.
With two aces and 13 winners, the 27-year-old Russian showed her class that was missing from her game since the start of the season and bounced over the 32-year-old Italian who couldn’t win a single breakpoint in the match.
The opening set was evenly poised until the end of the seventh game but the slick and stylish touches of the Russian earned her the first breakthrough of the clash that proved enough as her opponent failed to convert the only breakpoint
of the match she earned in the ninth game of the set.
Schiavone lost the breakpoint in the first game of the second set and continued to trail until the ending moments where she gifted another breakthrough to the former playboy magazine cover model that proved enough to finish the
match at a high note.
Zvonareva plays Serena Williams up next.
Maria Kirilenko (14) handed over a pre-mature win after withdrawal of Mariana Duque-Marino
World number 15, Maria Kirilenko, started the Olympics campaign with a bagel against the 22-year-old Colombian, Mariana Duque-Marino, on Monday. However, the Russian was saddened by the fact that the 115th ranked Colombian
had to bow down early due to an injury.
Kirilenko approached the injury-stricken Marino; consoled her and left her with a kiss on her cheek that brought the crowd on their feet. The rivalry was put aside for humanity; something that is missing in the new generation of
leaders.
The 25-year-old Russian won 30 points in her pre-mature win compared to 13 of her rival that featured seven startling winners and three fiery aces. However, the early finish to the match helped the 14th seed Russian
to prepare for her doubles encounter that was played later in the day.
Kirilenko contests Heather Watson in round two.
Nadia Petrova (16) plonked Jie Zheng
World number 23, Nadia Petrova, survived an early scare against the 25th ranked Chinese, Jie Zheng, in the opening round of London Olympics. She won the clash 6-4, 7-6(7).
Petrova plays Anna Tatishvili in the next round.
She contested her doubles match along with Maria Kirilenko and won it in straight sets 6-3, 6-2; dispatching Yaroslava Shvedova and Galina Voskoboeva, the team of Kazakh superstars.
