It's basically because men have more secondary s*x characteristics that kick in at puberty. (muscles, hair, height etc)

I think it is more that an adult male has the instinct the protect those weaker than himself within his 'tribe' (talking cavemen here) This would be the women and children of the group. This is why women look more trustworthy, because they are less threatening/imposing.
