Women cricket on the rise, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sana-Mir-c88459 - Cricket News Update
The captain of Pakistan women cricket team, Sana Mir, on Friday said that women cricket in the country has developed significantly over the past twelve months adding that the credit for all the latest achievements goes to Pakistan
Cricket Board’s decision to hand central contracts to women cricketers.
The Sana Mir-led women in green recently qualified for the 2013 http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Women’s 50-over World Cup after they finished runners up in the tournament qualifiers held in Bangladesh. The Pakistan women have already qualified for next year’s
World T20 Women’s championship scheduled to be held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
Ms Mir said that since being awarded with the PCB central contracts, their approach to the game is entirely professional.
"Our approach to the game is entirely professional now," said Mir while talking to the media reporters on Friday. "It is not just a game but a profession we have chosen to earn a livelihood from," she added further.
The Pakistan Cricket Board had awarded central contracts to 19 women cricketers in May earlier this year. The total 19 players were divided into four categories, Category A, Category B, Category C and retainers. Sana Mir, along with
five other teammates, had been offered the highly paid Category A contract.
PCB had decided to offer central contracts to the women cricketers after the national squad claimed gold medal in the inaugural women's cricket tournament at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/China-c40996 last November.
"We have been struggling in many areas but in the last couple of years things have improved significantly,” said Sana Mir, who was Pakistan’s second highest run scorer in the recently concluded ICC World Cup qualifiers in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
“Cricket is very old in our region but among women it is not that popular; it has gained popularity among girls only in the last six-seven years,” she added further.
Pakistan cricket climbed to number six on ICC’s women’s ODI rankings this year but the Pakistan skipper said that they still lag behind in many areas and there is a lot of scope for improvement.
Talking about his team’s target for the 2013 Women’s World Cup, Mir said that they want to make it to the semi-finals at least.
