  1. I read this about ten times and outlined the book while studying the art of novel construction and character development. Personally, I think it's Lawrence's best.

The name is misleading; it really has no more to do with Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen's desires as women than Rupert and Gerald's desires as men.

Rather than being a tome for Women's Studies, it pretty much rejects "groupist" thinking, and studies desires of individuals as they struggle to understand their sexuality and emotions. Gudrun and Ursula have such different personalities it would be impossible to look at them and say "Ah, so THIS is what women want!"

Likewise with Rupert and Gerald. Rupert and Ursula overcome their personal problems to find a happy ending; Gerald and Gudrun are stymied by Gerald's high expectations of himself and Gudrun's amazing self-centeredness.

Fantastic characters in this book. It's more an attempt at creating realistic characters than trying to come up with broad, gender-based statements.

All humans have an innate desire to breed, it's instinct. By the time this urge gets filtered through the four quirky characters in this novel, the end results are totally different and no other useful gender generalizations can be made.
