Women in science.?

I read in the New Scientist that women in science and engineering are compromised because it is such a male dominated environment and stuff.

Why do people even differentiate between a man and a woman when it comes to professions? Its like saying - you can't do this job because you have b***s. its ridiculous.

it was said in there that 52% of women left their job in science/engineering 'due to male dominated hostile work environments'

is it really so bad?

  1. There are several issues here. In condoning hostile behaviour in male dominated workplaces, we are implicitly stating that it is OK. It is unacceptable for several reasons. The first is the hostility - both men and women should be able to work in a fair environment where she is judged by her academic merit rather than gender. I have friends that are struggling with coworkers that snicker at her, despite her PhD in Engineering physics. She is never invited to collaborate in research because she is not considered "one of the boys", which in turn compromises tenure opportunities.

We also want to send a message to young girls (and boys) that they can choose what they would like to be, and make it as accessible as possible.
