1. Yes, a lot more women in this trade I've noticed. Maybe women business owners through the chamber of commerce. Many journeymen are family men. Only want you to work as hard as you can, no complaining. The same they expect from a man. Of course, there's always a bad apple. But you get a thick skin and after awhile, won't take c**p from anyone. Good luck..

  2. I'm a woman I do tool and die . I've never meet another woman who has schooling for this, have been since 1992. Do not be intimidated. i have had a few who appose it, but for the most part they approve. The men are thinking why is she doing this, is it something to do with sexual harassment(trust me I was put through that test). Don't rely on them to do your job, but let them teach you. Be up front with them, most men are not back stabbers. I hate to say this but it is true, men are much better co- workers than women. I've stayed married to the same man through it all and no we met before and we have never worked at the same place. I work with 4 other men now, they are devoted to their family's just as i am. One thing I always make clear is "If I don't want to hear it I can walk away just don't touch me or disrespect me." The thing is women talk dirtier than men and I know this for a fact. There is also less drama with men, you will love it. Don't use words like"because i'm a woman and don't dress like you are in a beauty contest dress in the way they dress,"My reason for choosing this kinda of job is because I didn't want to work in production and I just couldn't see me in heels and dress every day.

  4. No there are not very many women electricians.

You have to be apprenticed by a Master electrician, union or non-union.

You might be able to find a non-union electrical contractor owned by a woman that is a Master electrician. If you find her, will she be any better to work for than a man?

As for how men feel, each of us is different and some of us can handle smart women that are willing to try new things and some can not.

The other problem you will run into are the parts of the job that require physical strength. In a union you would get the same pay even if you can't manually bend 1/2 rigid conduit or lug 6" rigid pipe fittings up a ladder. This will cause the Foreman to put you on lighter duty work, and some of the guys will not be happy. (I saw it happen)

So, make sure the light duty work requires more brain power, like control panels, and Motor control centers and communication cables that way in the future you get the smart duty jobs, because any one can lug around conduit.

Keep in mind that apprentices get treated like dirt because they are apprentices, so don't just assume it's because of your gender.

Don't spend too much time looking for the wire stretcher, and remember shorted fuses are good.
