  1. What do you want to know?  They couldn't vote.  There were very few co-ed colleges.  The fashion was to wear very tight corsets to give a "wasp waist" effect.  These tight corsets caused health problems and actually caused internal organs to move from their proper locations.

There were very few career opportunities.  No birth control.  Death in childbirth was not uncommon.  Divorce was almost impossible.

  2. During that time Carrie Nation took her hatchet to all the saloons.  The first women's rights meeting was held in 1849 in Seneca NY.  Susan B Anthony did her women's right's thing. Quite a few things were also invented such as Ellen Fitz inventing the globe.  The time of g*y ninties music songs such as Ta ra ra boom, Bird in a Gilded Cage, The Man from Montecarlo, Take Me out to the Ball Game.

  3. Yes, we had many women living here during that time.

  4. Yes. There WERE in fact women living in the U.S. in the late nineteenth century. Men, children and small furry animals, too.

  5. I don't believe it.  You have no proof to validate your statement, and without at least one WIKIPEDIA link, I refuse to even consider it as truth.

  6. Tracey you mustn't forget the large animals or the finned and fathered ones either...oh there were incests too..and trees, yes there were plants as well.

EDIT- Oh I forgot fungus and mold.

  7. ...and the f***s grew in number. Now it's your turn!

Best freudian slip I've seen in a long time...

  9. ...were most likely to be named Mary.

  10. I apologise profusely, I am actually from the twentieth century. I think you will be hard pressed to find some nineteenth century domestic maidens hanging around here let alone with cognizance of how in fact you use a computer

  11. I know it's crazy....you'd think they didn't evolve yet seeing how some of them act! LOL!

  12. A lot died in childbirth and some from TB, but still, home made APPLE pie was still in existance.

    Whats your point?

  14. Yes, in fact, women WERE  living in the U.S. in the late nineteenth century, along with men and children, and long before that I would assume.  =P

  15. Yes, there were women here at that time.

  16. Yes.

  17. What about them?

If you mean what sort of lives did they live, that would depend very much on their background, education etc.

Employment opportunities for women expanded a lot during the late 19th century, a third of all government jobs were done by women by 1900, and three-quarters of the country's stenographers and typists were women by that time.  A great many women were employed as salesclerks in the new big department stores that were built in the later part of the century.  Nursing of course was a popular career for women, and there was a growing number of women doctors.

Many girls were going to college in this era, by 1880 there were 40,000 American girls in college, that was a third of the total student population.  So popular did college for women become that in 1890 the Ladies Home Journal ran a subscription selling contest, the prize was a scholarship to Vassar.

Most working women were single, women generally expected to give up work when they married, unless they were very poor, 'juggling' was not popular in that era.

Women's clubs were very popular with all kinds of women, there were thousands of clubs across the USA, women got together to discuss history, literature, and current affairs.

Many women were actively involved in social reform, the Women's Suffrage movement had many supporters, but a great many more were members of the Women's Temperence movement.

Bicycling was a big craze with men and women, it was the first time in history when it became acceptable for women to show their legs, at any rate when they were on a bike.
