Women’s 4 Nations Hockey Tournament: Australia beats Argentina 3-2 – Hockey Update
The Australian Women’s hockey team put in a tremendous effort as they managed to beat the World Champions Argentina 3-2 in the finals of the Women’s 4 Nations Women’s Hockey Tournament on February 13 at Mendoza.
Australian Ashleigh Nelson managed to score the first goal of game in the first ten minutes of play. Argentina fought hard throughout the first half but was unable to score due to the brilliant defensive play of the Australian goal keeper Rachael Lynch.
She managed to hold off the aggressive Argentineans from scoring.
Argentina gave a hard time on the field trying to overcome the Australian lead but failed to do so until half-time was called. Despite three penalty corner opportunities, Argentina was unable to score and the Australian goal keeper Rachael Lynch continued
to hold them well from doing so.
During the second half of play, Argentina came out aggressive and tried hard to score an equalizer. However, Delfina Merino finally put in a goal to tie the game 1-all.
The pace of the game continued to build as Australia kept up the pressure on the Argentineans. The World Champions put up some solid defence and took control of the game briefly. They managed to score a goal with just 12 minutes remaining in the second half
of play.
As the excitement was at its peak, the Australians got a penalty corner in the last minute of play which Jodie Schulz made to tie the game 2-2.
With both teams in extra time, it was the Australian Schulz that put in a tremendous goal to take the 3-2 victory and spoil the chances of Argentina from winning their second Championship title.
The Australian coach Commens was relatively happy with the performance of his team, but was still under the impression that more work is needed by the squad to get ready for the all important 2012 London Olympics. The game was exciting as both teams fought
hard for a victory.
