Women’s ATP rankings: Who is going to be on top towards the end of the season
The Belgian tennis stars Justine Henin as well as Kim Clijsters made some sounds when they refreshed their contestation at Brisbane International, a tune up event heading to Australian Open Championship, whereas Serena Williams faced her first defeat of the season at Medibank International Sydney final versus Elena Dementieva.
With Dementieva and Clijsters, defending their very first title of the season, they both carry high expectations going in the season's first major tournament.
The exciting stories down under persist since the beginning of the season, when ex champion Maria Sharapova was taken aback in the round number one. It is followed by Kim’s who was pushed down by Nadia Petrova in the third round. In the quarterfinals, Victoria Azarenka nearly succeeded in her match versus Serena but finished off losing in a 4-6 7-6(4) 6-2 close clash and Li Na knocked down Venus Williams 2-6 7-6(4) 7-5 to ruin the all Williams semi-final prospects.
In the final match, competition appeared to be refreshed when Serena, who hammered down Li in the close tiebreaker semi-finals match and Henin, who defeated Jie Zheng in the one sided semi-final encounter, faced each other on the very first occasion in the Grand Slam final. It was an absolute delight to watch.
Does Serena experiences an upset? Nearly as the match went on to two sets.
A full mark to Henin’s attempt, as Serena is a better player than her at the grandest stage. The conclusion: Serena earned her 12th Grand Slam trophy, levelling Billie Jean King's record.
After the wake less matches on clay, everyone requires to find their form on grass. The transformation has never been an easy one but it lifts their courage moving to Wimbledon. In the end, Williams gained her second major of the season, her fourth Wimbledon trophy, beating Vera Zvonareva in the finals.
With such magisterial performance, most particularly her fatal serve, Serena Williams now has a total of thirteen Grand Slam trophies to her name, overtaking King with a total of twelve. With such performances, she is expected to seize Martina Navratilova's and Chris Evert's track of eighteen Grand Slam trophies. As for Serena, it is just a matter of a couple of more years.
Since Serena has successfully defended her trophy, she also secured the two thousand ranking points. However, after the grass court Grand Slam tournament, how much more points Serena still requires in order to defend?
Serena has already grabbed 5,355 points, where as her elder sister Venus Williams has gathered 4,084 points. Following them is none other than Samanath Stosur, who was also a French Open finalist and has so far earned a total of 3,505 points, followed tightly by number two Jelena Jankovic with a total of 3,475 points.
So the question is that who stands above from the rest for the hard court challenge ahead?
Although, Stosur lead the top ten with a win loss record of 35-10 after the grass court Grand Slam tournament. The Williams sisters, along with the Belgians have been coming out with good results and with a mutual 112-23 win loss track, it indicates that they are recently ruling the women's side.
However, there is no doubt about the fact that the Williams sisters are clearly ahead of the rest and there's every possibility that this will persist till the season ends. They have been genuinely commanding since the start of the WTA tour and it appears like they are not in a mood to stop.
Venus Williams has given quite a time to draw alongside, but Serena definitely has clear lead end the season ranked number one on the third occasion. Since 2002, both the Williams sisters are the top ranked players from the women’s side.
Can anyone ruin it? Well, to find the answer for that, everybody has to wait and see if someone else can take the charge like the American sensation Serena Williams does.
