Women’s Australian Hockey League Round-up: Part 1
The finals week of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) that started on May 28, 2011 and concluded on June 03, with OAMPS Southern Suns coming out victorious as overall champions of the league. There were plenty of hardly-fought games those enchanted the masses
a lot.
Winner–Runner's-up
Following a brilliant show-off, the OAMPS Southern Suns knocked out New South Wales (NSW) Arrows by a single goal, 1-0 in Darwin and lifted the first ever title of the AHL for in the last sixteen years. Though NSW Arrows were quite favourites for the title
victory, they failed to show sparkling game and lost the trophy.
It is vital to mention here that the Southern Suns were not quite preferred for the title-win, as they have had only one international player while seven Hockeyroos members were part of the opposite team. However, the Southern Suns played a well-coordinated
game and put NSW Arrows under intense pressure. It was the day of Southern Suns which demonstrated outstanding game and captured the title for the first time.
3rd–4th Play-off Games
WA Diamonds defeated OAMPS Queensland Scorchers by a single goal, 4-3 and obtained the third place in the championship. It was quite an interesting encounter, where Diamonds faced Scorchers for the third and fourth positions play-off game. It is pertinent
to mention here that the duo teams contested the finals of the AHL in the last five editions and every time Diamonds defeated Scorchers to win the mega event.
The two teams started the play-off game quite maturely, but it was WA Diamonds that drew the first blood in the 6th minute of the game. Shelly Liddelow managed to take the ball at the top of the circle and unleashed a powerful shot that moved
absolutely into the goal-posts, opening the score at 1-0. In a matter of six minutes, Kandice Olivieri took the ball into her control and tied the results at one-all by tapping it into the WA goal.
Again after the six minutes, the Diamonds regained the lead when Chantelle Ciallella scored a goal from the field. In the 27th minute of the match, Jodie Schulz of Scorchers converted a short corner and levelled the score at 2-2. In the last minute
of the first half of play, Hope Munro scored off a penalty corner to take the lead in the game, 3-2.
The second half was quite slow where only two goals were scored. Sian Nelson scored a goal for Diamonds in the 62nd minute of the match while Amy Korner of Scorchers answered it in the 69th minute but to no avail. The Scorchers lost
the game at 4-3.
