Women’s Cricket News – September 5, 2010: ICC Women's Challenge; England’s Tour of Sri Lanka
England has added four uncapped players in its 15-member women's squad that would tour Sri Lanka in November. Along with the fast bowler of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rowe-c86927, Fran Wilson, and Lauren Griffiths. Charlotte Edwards will lead the side during the Sri Lanka tour that runs from November 14-22.
English women will tour Sri Lanka without three key players, including slow left-arm bowler Holly Colvin, all-rounder Katherine Brunt and wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in January for the Ashes series. Another reason behind leaving the experienced players in England was that both the cricketers wanted to focus on their university studies as well.
The reason behind Sri Lanka going without the wicketkeeper-batsman Sarah Taylor was that the player had requested the selectors that she wants to take some time out from International cricket and the selectors, accepting her request, have dropped her from the 15-member squad due to tour Sri Lanka later this year.
England's head of women's cricket, Clare Connor, has termed the announced squad as "dynamic", and is hopeful that the novices would duly avail the opportunity that has been given to them. Connor is also eying the 2013 Women’s Cricket World Cup and said that the purpose behind injecting young blood into the side was to check exactly where the English side stands in terms of its journey towards the 2013 World Cup.
"Without three influential players, opportunities are being given to Academy graduates Fran http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wilson-c98046, Susie Rowe and Lauren Griffiths. It is essential that we always have a keen eye on player succession planning. Blooding some of our Academy talent on the full international stage in Sri Lanka will show exactly where we are in terms of the journey towards the World Cup in 2013."
England’s tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 kicks off from November 14 and would end on 22nd November. During the tour, England will play two One-Day Internationals and a T20 international against hosts Sri Lanka women.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 has axed experienced all-rounder Pamela Lavine from its ICC Women's Challenge squad. The challenge would be played at Potchefstroom in South Africa this October.
With the experienced Lavine left out of the squad, two new faces, Pearl Etienne and Subrina Munroe earned a place in the squad for ICC Women's Challenge. Both Etienne and Munroe are very good seamers and got the selector’s nod on the basis of their remarkable performance in the recently concluded WICB Women's tournament.
WICB Chairman of Selectors Clyde Butts said that both the seamers are very good and can perform with the bat as well. Butts hoped the young seamers would make good contribution in the lower order of the side.
Butts termed the squad a “balanced side” with a lot of all-rounders, and expected the young but experienced side to perform well in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757. Butts is looking at the series as a part of the build-up to the 2013 Women’s World Cup.
"This series is being seen as part of the ultimate build-up to the next ICC Women's World Cup. We are looking to build with the future in mind. This trip will be a chance to gain more experience in foreign conditions."
The Chairman of the selection committee said that Lavine’s omission was prompted by her recent dip in form. Lavine’s general fitness worked against her so the selectors decided to go for other available well-in-form resources. Butts denied that her omission from the ICC Women's Challenge squad means that she has been discarded from the side.
West Indies play their first One-Day match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 on 6th October and take on the hosts in the first T20 on 14th October.
