Sherwin Campbell, the coach of West Indies women, is confident about his side's chances at the upcoming ICC Women's Cricket Challenge that kick starts in Potchefstroom, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 on 6th of this month. The tournament is first of its kind and
will feature fifth to 10th ranked women teams in a series of One Day Internationals followed by a T20 series.
The West Indies women are completing their three-match warm-up programme at home these days. In the warm-up programme the side sealed 57-run win over Banks CC Invitational XI before losing to a strong boy’s side from Combermere School with a massive margin
of 120 runs. Despite their defeat against Combermere School’s boys, the coach Campbell is positive that his side is well in form to finish the event at a victorious note.
Talking about the practice programme of his side, Campbell told the media reporters that the players had quite productive net sessions. According to Sherwin, the basic purpose behind playing the West Indies women against quality local opposition was to test
the performance of the middle order of line-up.
"I believe we will do very well in South Africa. We had some very productive net sessions, and I also wanted to see how the girls would perform in the middle, so we had three very successful matches against quality local opposition. I was not really looking
at the results. I was looking to make sure that the players got the necessary work before we depart for what will be a very important tour of South Africa," Campbell said.
The West Indies women would be having no time to practice in South Africa, as the side will be going straight into the fixtures soon after reaching Potchefstroom, so Campbell made sure his side gets as much preparations as possible. Campbell has shown satisfaction
upon the fitness levels of the players. He praised the involvement of the girls into the practice sessions in the camp and said that all the players have been working really hard.
The former West Indies vice-captain opined that his side is good enough to win the ever first ICC Women's Cricket Challenge. He added further that cricket is a sport in which the players are actually tested in the field and not on paper or in the dressing
room, so it depends upon the West Indies women to go out there and prove their winning mettle. Campbell said that they have not considered any of the opposition as an easy, and will play the tournament game by game.
West Indies is the top-ranked side in the tournament so would have a psychological edge as well on the other competitors but at the same time other sides would targeting the team to beat. Campbell’s side is quite good in all three departments – batting,
bowling and fielding – all that they need to do is to take care of the basics and stay in control of their game.
Campbell has expressed his confidence on the bowling department of his side.
Talking about the make-up of the squad heading to South Africa, Campbell said: "In women's cricket the spinners normally dominate, and it is good that we have some quality spinners in our team. Our spinners are also very good batters as well, so they will
double up. We also have some good seamers, so overall we have a balanced attack. We need to make sure we get the runs on the board and I'm sure the bowlers will do the job."
The ICC Women's Cricket Challenge kicks off on 6th October with the opener being played between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 women.
