Women’s Volleyball Update: Peru rules in the 1st match of Final Four Women’s Championship 2010
The North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Federation (NORCECA) is up with another exciting event of Final Four Women’s Championship in Tuxtle Gutierrez, Mexico. Teams from Peru and Dominican Republic opened the tournament with first match on Tuesday,
21st September, 2010.
First Set – (25-18)
The first set saw sensational play from Peru. Peruvian girls sparked with good performance and produced strong serves. They applied wonderful ball-reception techniques, which earned them an early lead over the opponents. The Dominican Republic’s team, which
was known for its brilliant win in Women’s Pan American Cup, 2010 demonstrated shaky performance against Peru. They kept defensive for most of time and attempted less attacks. In the meantime, South American team extended their lead by hitting more powerful
shots. Diana Soto of Peru formed good combination with captain girl Leyla Chihuan and stormed Dominican Republic’s court with fireballs. Peru’s score rose up, and they stretched it to the finish line. The first set was secured by Peru with a score of 25-18.
Second Set – (25-14)
The Caribbean ladies faced serve problems in second set. They failed to attain the suitable rhythm for the game. They were struggling in the game with a failing impression. On the other side of the court, Peruvian players were quite active to hit the ball
with full-arm power. Their under-hand shots created huge impact in the game and helped their scores to rise up. The Dominicans had a hard time to penetrate heavy spikes and seemed totally helpless in the hands of Peru. The South Americans continued with success
and remained on the same winning course. They quickly hit the finish line at 25-14 and pushed Dominicans in the blue region.
Third Set – (25-15)
After dropping two sets, the hope deficit prevailed on the Dominican side. Peru’s team put more pressure on them and restricted their score to low stake. Lisvel Eve Mejia and Sidarka Nunez tried to defend Dominican’s score and blocked a few good shots. They
achieved little stability but that was not enough to overcome the power of strong Peruvian team. In the latter half of third set, Dominican became completely despondent and moved along with dead pace. Peru achieved the set point and ended the 15-point golden
set with an unstoppable spike (25-15).
Captain and Coach’s Views
Karla Echenique, the Dominican captain regretted about the bad performance and loss of first game against Peru. She commented, “We played a great match against a great team but not at our level, anyway we are in a very important process of preparation to
the World Championship.”
The Dominican’s coach had the same feelings of remorse but he still credited his team for putting up a good fight. It was a tough match for Dominican Republic’s team, as they just returned from Grand Prix and didn’t get time for preparation. On the other
hand, Peru’s team recently played a friendly series with Canada, which put them in a good form.
Likewise, Peruvian captain Leyla Chihuan had her say about the match. She urged people to take it as a game and refused to be unfair. She said, “This is not revenge, everybody say so, but games are different every time, Dominican Republic is a great team
and we also have to be prepared for the World championship.” Moreover, the assistant coach of Peru, Edwin Jimenez also appreciated Dominican’s effort. He said, “We respect the quality of all participants and this tournament will help us a lot for the next
stage, because we expect to be between the eight best nations of the World.”
