Women’s cricket: Debutant Sarah Elliott helps Australia regain Ashes
A clinical batting performance from debutant http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 to a seven-wicket win over England Women in the only Test played at Bankstown Oval as the Aussie Women sealed their first Ashes victory in six years.
Elliot’s effort were well complimented by the skipper Alex Blackwell with a fine half-century as the home side sealed the deal in their favour after England controlled the first three days of the four-day fixture. Elliot and Blackwell
shared the match-winning partnership worth 125 runs for the third wicket stand.
The hosts, chasing 198 to win, resumed the final day at 29 for 1 with opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shelley-Nitschke-c89961 at the crease at 12 and debutant Sarah Elliot unbeaten on 17. First wicket of the day fell when Nitschke was trapped leg before wicket off
Isa Guha in the morning session with 54 on the board. The departing opener played a cautious knock of 20 runs which came off 102 deliveries.
After Nitschke’s dismissal, Elliot was joined by the skipper Alex Blackwell to post what turned out to be a match-winning stand in the end.
The morning session was quite tough as the home side could only score 48 runs before lunch. But Elliot and Blackwell paced the innings after the break and by tea, the hosts were just 30 runs behind the victory with their eight wickets
still intact.
The only threat to an easy win came when the skipper Blackwell holed out soon after returning from tea. Blackwell, scored painstaking 74 runs in her 140-ball stay at the crease before Katherine Brunt trapped her in front of the wicket
with the second new ball.
Despite losing her partner in the final stages of the game, Elliott kept her nerves to secure a seven-wicket win for the hosts. Elliot’s unbeaten 81 came off mostly singles and doubles as her 262-ball long stay at the crease saw her
clearing the boundary only once.
The women from down under made a strong comeback into the game on day three of the Test match when the 24-year-old right-arm medium pacer Rene Farrell picked up 5 wickets conceding only 23 runs as the tourists were dismissed for 149
in their second innings.
