Lydia Greenway’s third successive match-winning innings helped England Women team beat Australia Women by five wickets in the second of the five-match Twenty20 series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.
Chasing a target of 100 runs to win, Greenway struck an unbeaten 30 off exactly the same number of balls as the tourists cruised past the 16-over target with two balls to spare.
The heavy rain that lashed Melbourne for the past 36 hours delayed the start of the match. As a result, the game was reduced to 16 overs per side.
England Women captain Charlotte Edwards had no hesitation in asking the Australians to bat first after winning the toss.
Australia Women scored 99 for the loss of 3 wickets from their allotted quota of 16 overs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shelley-Nitschke-c89961 top scored with 27 runs off 30 balls while Leah Poulton and Alex Blackwell scored 21 each.
In reply, England Women lost opener Laura Marsh in the third over with only 8 on the board. But they did not stutter and amassed 39 for 1 inside six overs. Aussie off-spinner Lisa Sthalekar scythed through the visiting line-up removing three crucial batsmen
in the next four overs to leave England Women reeling at 56 for 4.
Danielle Wyatt was bowled in the sixth over when she was on 18 while skipper Edwards returned Sthalekar a catch that was superbly taken by the bowler and Suzie http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rowe-c86927 was caught by Perry in deep midwicket.
Lydia Greenway and Jenny Gunn then helped the tourists overcome the quick collapse with a 43-run stand for the fifth wicket. Although the duo did not hit many boundaries, yet they kept the scorecard ticking through singles and doubles and ensured an England
victory in the second match of the series.
The fielding of both the sides was below par and the hosts missed a chance of levelling the series by 1-1 when Rene Farrell dropped Greenway off her own bowling in the second last over of the innings.
