Women’s handball team from Iceland faces tough times at 2011 Championship – Handball News
The women’s handball team from Iceland is having a decent run at the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship. The team has been placed in Group A of the competition. Their rivals in the group include Norway, Montenegro, Angola,
Germany and China. Tournament will be held from December 2 to 18, 2011 in Brazil. The women’s handball team from Iceland played their opening match at the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship against Montenegro on December 3, 2011. Iceland secured a narrow
win 21-22 over their opponents.
Their second match of the tournament was played on December 6, 2011. After their win over Montenegro, the women Icelandic players had a high level of motivation but they could not play well against Angola the next day on December
4, 2011. The Angolans beat them 28-24. The Icelandic players started their downward spiral journey when they lost another match, this time against Norway on December 6, 2011.
The Norwegian handball team performed well against Iceland. The team from Iceland lost the match 14-27, which was a humiliating defeat to say the least. Iceland would be facing China on December 9, 2011, where they would try to
beat the Chinese women handball players to secure a steady place in the tournament.
This is for the very first time in the history of the Iceland’s women’s handball that they are competing in this tournament. For Iceland, their match against Montenegro was their first match at the World Women’s Handball Championship.
Looking at their performance against Montenegro, it felt like the Icelanders were trying to cope up with their opponents throughout the match. The pressure they faced while playing at their debut Championship match in Brazil this year was evident during the
game.
Montenegro was closing in to beat the debutant Iceland team but the first-timers kept their nerves under control and clinched a very narrow win. They could not do the same when they played against Norway. The Norwegian handball
team who won the 1998 European Championship, the 1999 World Championship, the 2004 European Championship and the 2008 Summer Olympics, were too much for the Iceland team.
For the Icelandic handball team, qualifying for the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship was the second occasion when they entered into any international competition, which is a big triumph for the players and the team officials.
The first time they qualified for any international competition was for the 2010 European Women’s Handball Championship.
