Womens hockey: Aussie Striker Amy Korner optimistic for re-selection
Legendary striker of the Kookaburras hockey team, Amy Korner, who was missing in the Commonwealth Games where Australia acquired a gold medal, is quite optimistic for making her entry back into the team after long rest.
Amy Korner took many advantages from the off-time including an operation, rest and prepared herself in a bid to contest the 2012 London Olympics from the Kookaburras side. She was part of the squad earlier in the World Cup, held in Argentina; but was dropped
due to ailment.
However, the legendary striker, who has her career filled with ins and outs, is working to be part of the team again by next year. She has started her training in the Queensland Academy and is working to regain her fitness level.
Amy Korner talking to the media said, “I’m just training very hard at the moment until the end of this week, then we get a week off over Christmas. I had about eight weeks off, which was really good.”
Korner, the 24-year-old, who made her international debut back in 2005, had represented her team in 45 matches including the Champions Trophy and even the World Cup.
The energetic Australian player is very happy over the appointment of a new coach of the squad and believes that he would give a fresh look to the team. Korner also believes that the new appointment would surely up the level of the team in the international
rankings.
Newly appointed coach of Kookaburras, Adam Commens is a former player of the Australian hockey team, who took the charge after the retirement of Frank Murray. Frank Murray spent a long time with the team and under his supervision; the Kookaburras won the
Commonwealth Games’ title.
Amy Korner along with the outstanding Jordyn Holzberger is invited in Perth from January 16th to 21st, where her fate regarding her future career would be decided. If she succeeds to impress the new coach then all will be fine, otherwise
she would have to be limited to the club level games.
Amy was of the view that it will be her last chance to make an entry into the team. However, she is quite hopeful to be part of the squad in the 2012 London Olympics.
