Womens olympic volleyball question?

I'm wondering what the things are that the ladies are wearing. They look like patches of some sort. I think its Misty May that has one on her shoulder. Is it like an adhesive ace bandage? I've seen some of the other ladies wearing similar things on other parts of the body.

  1. She had surgery recently and even though it's mostly healed she wants it sealed up tight. Sand on the court can be very abrasive, so with sweat & rain they've experienced...she just used some very heavy duty tape to seal it up. As for the other players I don't know for sure, but suppose they got scratches and abrasive wounds rolling in the sand and just taped them up. Also since the #1 player has it on her, it could be considered fashionable to the other players.

  2. Her shoulder got hurt I think. I'm not sure. Please answer mines everyone!

"The mystery of the black stuff on Kerri Walsh's shoulder

    By Chris Chase

[.....]  (I edited out the boring stuff) =)

As is usually the case in instances like this, the most mundane explanation is also the correct one. The black markings on Walsh's shoulder are a sort of medical tape. Specifically, it's called kinesio tape, a special elastic material designed to support muscles while offering an unimpeded range of motion. Walsh had shoulder surgery last fall to remove bone chips, bone spurs and scar tissue that had built up over a lifetime of setting and spiking. The tape, and taping method, help stabilize the shoulder during the match and aids in circulation."

EDIT: If you want more information on the type of tape.. here is the web site: http://www.kinesiotaping.com/

  4. Kerri Walsh wears tape on her shoulder, because a injury that required surgery.
