Women’s tennis: Who would be the next tennis ace?
It’s an unfortunate and a sad fact of tennis, or for that matter any other sport, that the players can perform exceptionally well during a few years of their professional lives. The older players’ gradually lose their spark and turn mediocre, making room
for newer, bright talent. This is a process revitalizes the game, reinvents the interest of fans, and helps the game evolve continuously. There are endless examples of new tennis stars taking over the older ones.   Martina Navratilova was eclipsed by Monica
Seles and Steffi Graf. In turn, they were overwhelmed with Martina Hingis’s game, which was further defeated by the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus. This never-ending process does not cease, bringing forth unique tennis talents and breath-taking moments.
Now, the Williams sisters are growing old, and hence, making way for a fresh new crop of tennis players. However, a dominance of young, under 23 year old players seems to be on the way, with the cream being the below-mentioned women.
Caroline Wozniacki: One of the few women on the court who seem to have it all (looks, skill and a charming personality, which has already captured the hearts of a mass fan following), she seems to be tennis’s best hope. Due to a series of
setbacks, she was unable to make an impact at the 2010 US Open; however, her progress this year was remarkable, encompassing 4 singles titles and a minimum achievement of the last 16 in every tournament. She has improved on her serve and is often referred
to as a female Rafa. Being only 20, she has every chance to kick start her career over the next few years.
Victoria Azarenka: Azarenka is another player who has shown great potential despite, for some reason, a fall-back this year. She dominated the 2009 season, reaching World Number 7 and several quarter-finals. Although she managed to make
it to the quarter finals of the Australian Open this year, this remains her only achievement at the Majors. She is more talented than somewhat similar players, for example Aggie Radwanska, and may well have a more successful career.
Maria Sharapova: One of the top most talented players on the court these days, this young Russian has already won three Grand Slam titles. Although she is only 23, she has been held back by injuries and a certain lack of mobility, which
has cost her success in tennis. However, she makes up for this inconsistency with a fierce determination and mental toughness. If she remains healthy, she may be able to launch the rest of her career with three or four more Grand Slam titles and a respectable
number of tournaments.
Dominika Cibulkova: A very talented 21-year-old player, her only setback is not her lack of skill or a mental block. This player just happens to be 5 foot 3 inches, and might pass for even less. Even though this would have been no issue
some years ago, women in tennis are taller and well-built than before these days. However, Cilbulkova made it to the 2009 French Open semi-final and the quarter-finals of this year’s US Open, showcasing a remarkable amount of toughness and resilience.
