Women’s volleyball Pan American Cup: Weekend review
The Women’s Pan American Cup is currently going on in Ciudad Juarez, the city of Mexico. It is for the 10th time that the tournament is taking place with various teams from all across the world taking part.
The weekend gone by saw a lot of pool matches take place in which some teams asserted their dominance while others got to know of their weaknesses early on and have an opportunity to improve on them to perform better in the quarterfinals. The level of skill
and competitiveness shown by each team is admirable and thrilling for the spectators to watch.
One such match took place between Peru as well as Trinidad and Tobago in which Peru was able to hand out a defeat to their rivals by making a clean sweep over them. The first and the second sets of the match were relatively easy for the Peru team to win
but Trinidad and Tobago gave them a run for their money in the third set of the game. However, the effort came in too late from the Trinidad and Tobago and Peru was able to seal the deal by winning the match at: 25-15, 25-17 and 29-27.
The win improved the tournament record of Peru to 1-1 while Trinidad and Tobago with no victories have a record showing 0-2. Both the teams find themselves in pool b in the pan am cup.
The other teams that are in pool b are Brazil and Costa Rica. Brazil with their reputation of being an excellent team as well as the honour of being the Olympics champions was able to smoother the Costa Ricans over the weekend. Like the Peruvians, the Brazilians
were also able to make a clean sweep over their opponents by registering the following final set scores: 25-15, 25-12 and 25-10.
Living up to their reputation, the Brazilians did not lose a single match in pool play and were able to scrap off a record of 2-0 over the weekend. On the other hand, the Costa Ricans have not yet won a match and are cradling a record of 0-2 in pool play
matches.
Apart from the above mentioned four teams that find themselves in pool B, the U.S. as well as the Puerto Rican squad also share the same space. As have been the recent trend, another sweep was made possible as the U.S. won three back-to-back sets over the
Puerto Ricans. Interestingly, the U.S. was able to accomplish the win by winning each set of the match at the same set score, i.e. 25-17.
The teams that have stood winners in pool a in their recent matches are Dominican Republic, Argentina and Cuba. These teams have defeated Chile, Canada and Mexico respectively.
