Question:

Won't finish community service on time... What's gonna happen?

My friend and I got busted for a personal amount of marijuana back in January. Due to crazy work and school schedules, we now have a week to do the 10ish hours that are left. Needless to say, we're not going to finish. What is the worst that could happen? I mean, marijuana IS decriminalized in NY, so they can't exactly throw us in jail. ...Right?

  1. Everyone has crazy schedules, but learning to prioritize & manage is part of growing up.  It appears you do not think breaking the law by using drugs is a major infraction, but your community has spent a major amount of time, effort & money because of your illegal act.  You OWE your community not only service, but more appropriate behavior in the future.  (FYI marijuana damages not only brain cells, but those in your gonads.)

I recommend you make a serious attempt to change organizations so you can get your responsibilities completed on time.  Even if you cannot get an official change, it would be a good idea to be able to explain to the court how you made such an effort & what you did as substitute, even if unoffcial, community service.  Be prepared to provide documentation.

We all have obligations to our communities, not just when busted.  Think how you can be a contributing member the rest of your live.  Ten hours in 6 months is pretty pitiful, so I'm hoping you can better yourself & your efforts.

  2. 10 hours in a week. Get off your butt and get it done. That way you can put the whole thing behind you.

  3. Depending on the judge, you may go to jail. Some judges fell that they "let you off' with the community service. Find another community service. even picking up trash. 10 hours is not that much time. Working only 40 hours a week is not that much time.
