My boyfriend and I have been trying to have a baby. I am currently taking Ambien 10mg, Klonapin .5mg and darvocet 250mg with tylenol. Are these drugs harmful to a developing fetus. I am concered that taking them every day will hurt them. I have been taking ambien for about 4 years now every day. The darvocet I could do with out it is just for pain managment. The klonapin I take every other day if needed for anxiety. All feedback is welcome.

  1. tHERE ARE MANY MEDS CONTRAINDICATED TO PREGNANCY BEFORE U GET PREGNANT TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR HE HAS THE BEST ANSWERS AND THE SAFE ANSERWS. tHE DOC NEDDS TO MEASURES  IF THE RISK OUTWEIGH THE BENEFITS

  2. You need to speak with a OBGYN about this. If you are trying to get pregnant you should of had a preconception check up to ensure you are healthy for pregnancy. These medications need to be evaluated with the OBGYN to ensure their safety in pregnancy. The first weeks of life are the most important for development and it is advised to not be taking any medications. So, make an appointment for a check up and speak about these medications. I know for a fact you cannot take darvocet while pregnant. I'm not sure about the other medications.

  3. Ambien is considered a "Pregnancy Category C" medication. Pregnancy Category C means that the drug hasn't been studied in pregnant women.

Studies on pregnant animals have shown birth defects or other problems, or no animal studies have been done.  The medicine should be used in pregnant women only if the benefits justify the risks. A medical case report, appearing in the journal Pharmacotherapy in early 2007, found traces of Ambien in a newborn baby's umbilical cord blood, suggesting that Ambien can cross the placenta. If this is true, it means that the drug can reach the unborn baby.

Klonopin was given a pregnancy Category D rating due to the problems it caused in animal studies. These studies suggested that Klonopin may increase the risk of various birth defects, including cleft palate and limb defects. However, this is a controversial issue, since some human studies have shown that the risk of birth defects may be very small. Benzodiazepines (such as Klonopin) may also cause other problems, such as withdrawal symptoms after an infant is born.

Category C - Darvocet may be harmful to an unborn baby, and could cause breathing problems or addiction/withdrawal symptoms in a newborn. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Darvocet can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Darvocet without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

  4. All of those meds could affect an unborn baby so it is best to talk to your Dr about them and find out if there is any way you can go without them or if your dose should be well monitored.  www.safefetus.com has a list of meds and their possible problems during pregnancy.
