Wong Choong Hann and Sung Hwan Park are through to the semis in the Swiss Open GP Gold 2011
Malaysia’s Wong Choong Hann and Korea’s Sung Hwan Park have moved into the semi-final stage of the Swiss Open GP Gold 2011 by beating their opponents in the men’s singles quarterfinals on Saturday, March 19. The 12th seed Choong Hann hammered
the top seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in straight sets, whereas the fourth seeded Park proved too strong for Ajay Jayaram of India and won the match in the same fashion. Both winners will meet in the semi-final which will be played later in the evening.
The Malaysian veteran surprised the crowd with his terrific performance against the number one seed Jorgensen. In the first set of the match, it was Choong Hann who dominated the rallies and dictated the pace of the game. Jorgensen was a bit slower than
the opponent and lost the set in a relatively disappointing manner, the score was 21-11, and Hann took just 12 minutes to win the first set.
In the second set, the Danish worked well in the starting points and took a slight lead at 5-4. That’s where the Malaysian geared up the speed and established a four-point lead by reaching 11-7, till the interval. After the one-minute break, Choong Hann
spared no chance for Jorgensen and wrapped up the second game with a 21-15 margin by spending just 15 minutes on court. The final score of the 27-minute match was 21-11 and 21-15.
In another quarterfinal match, the fourth seed, Park, stopped the impressive run of Ajay by beating him two tight games. In the opening set, both players demonstrated a super performance by playing top class badminton and remained equal at 10-10. The Indian
scored a point on the net and took a one-point lead till the 60-second interval.
After getting back into the court, Park became more aggressive and levelled the score at 19-19. At this crucial stage of the match, the Korean remained in complete control of the game and grabbed the remaining two points in row to win the opening set by
a narrow margin of 21-19, in 23 minutes.
The second game was almost identical as both players grew with the same pace and reached 18-18. Park again proved his worth by scoring the remaining points and won the set 21-19, in 23 minutes.  The concluding score of the 45-minute match was 21-19 and 21-19.
