Wong Choong Hann beats Suppanyu Avihingsanon in the round-of-16 of the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold
Malaysia’s Men’s Singles veteran, Wong Choong Hann, has proved his worth by beating Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2011.
Choong Hann, who is currently ranked at the Number 32 spot in the Men’s Singles world rankings, played marvellous badminton against the local shuttler in a rubber-set match, which lasted 55 minutes long.
In the first set, the 16th seed Choong Hann, opened the game in an attacking fashion and quickly created a five-point lead by reaching at 11-6 in the first-half of the game. Suppanyu was completely helpless against the powerful strokes of the
Malaysian, who was playing a very fast game.
After the interval, Choong Hann maintained the gap by playing at the same pace and manipulated all the weaknesses of his opponent. Hann bagged the opening game quite comfortably in just 16 minutes, with a 21-10 margin.
In the following set, Suppanyu lifted the level of his game and matched Choong Hann’s speed. He got huge support from the local crowd in the game, which lifted his confidence level to perform better against a stronger opponent. Throughout the second set,
the Thai player remained in a dominating position. The Malaysian made too many mistakes and lost the second set in 20 minutes, by a score of 15-21.
In the final game of this entertaining fight, the experienced Malaysian controlled the rallies right from the start by playing with great precision. He continued playing aggressive badminton throughout the set against a nervous Suppanyu, who failed to put
up a good show in the final set. Despite a spirited comeback in the second set, the Thai player was unable to put pressure on his rival in the match deciding game.
Choong Hann finished the set in 19 minutes with a huge gap of 21-12. The 55-minute battle ended with a 21-10, 15-21 and 21-12 score on the board.
In the quarter-final of the Thailand Open, Choong Hann will be up against the fourth seed, Chen Jin of China, who defeated Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in a scintillating three-set match, in the pre-quarter-final of the championship.
