Wong Choong Hann takes revenge from Hsieh Yu Hsing in first round of the 2011 World Championships
Malaysia’s veteran shuttler, Wong Choong Hann took revenge in impressive style as he crushed Hsieh Yu Hsing in the Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 World Championships, in London, on Tuesday, August 9.
The 34-year-old Wong Choong played to his maximum potential and spent only 17 minutes to grab victory against the Taiwanese, who was moving quite slowly in the court because of an injury to his knee. The Malaysian took revenge for his two previous defeats
from the hands of the same opponent at the 2000 Olympic Games and in the Macau Open.
World Number 32, Wong Choong displayed his wonderful skills to indicate that he has some badminton left in him and that he can spoil the party of any top shuttler on a given day. He finished-off the first-round fight in straight games without working too
hard.
In the opening game of the match, the Malaysian remained ahead of Hsieh Yu until the interval. He continued to control the set after the one-minute break and finished-off the opening game with an amazing margin of 21-7, in just 8 minutes.
In the following game, he played the same game by keeping the pace high which disturbed the movement of the injured Hsieh Yu, who almost gave up fighting. The Malaysian grabbed the second set by a stunning 21-9 score in just 9 minutes. The ending score of
this first-round battle was 21-7 and 21-9.
After the match, Wong Choong said, “My target was to clear the first round and I have achieved it. Now I can proudly say that I have won a match at Wembley. I wanted so much to be a part of the rich history here and I am glad I’ll have a good memory of the
place now.”
He further added, “I did well when the world meet was last held in England, which was back in 2003. The atmosphere is certainly different. Hopefully, I can win the second round match too.”
In the Men’s Singles second round, Wong Choong will take on Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand, who had to work hard for his win against Netherland’s Eric Pang in the first round of the championship.
