Wong Tat Meng confident to put Women’s Singles department on right track – Badminton news
Wong Tat Meng, the former international shuttler, joined Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after coaching in Indonesia for one year and he is determined to put the Women’s Singles players back on track.
Tat Meng worked for BAM as a coach for eight years before leaving for Indonesia one year ago and now his contract with Indonesian Badminton Association is over and he has regained his positioned in Malaysia and will train the Women’s Singles shuttlers.
Female shuttlers in Women’s Singles category have been working hard but failed to get recognition at international stage as they could not earn respectable results in major tournaments for the last one year.
Malaysian shuttlers even remained unable to make it to the knock out stage at the London Olympics and also failed to even qualify for the 2011 World Championships.
After the retirement of Wong Mew Choo, who was the most seasoned Women’s Singles shuttlers in Malaysia, no other shuttler could even get there at her level and this department went on suffering.
However, Tat Meng is determined to put things back on track as he has impressive coaching experience and is looking forward to get good results from female players at international events.
While talking about his return to Malaysia from Indonesia, Tat Meng said that his two-year contract, which was later on reduced to one year, got over and he joined BAM again as the governing body was looking for a coach.
He said, “My return to Malaysia is all about timing. I was hired by Indonesia under a two-year contract but they reduced it to one and my job with them ended with the London Olympic Games. At the same time, Malaysia was looking for a coach. It all fell into
place nicely.”
Mew Choo played under the supervision of Tat Meng and she has been producing impressive results at international stage. She grabbed Women’s Singles title at China Open 2007 and became the first Malaysian female player to earn that honour.
Tat Meng also expressed that the performance of female shuttlers, especially after Mew Choo left the international arena, was not up to the mark.
He added, “The performances of Malaysia’s women’s singles have dropped. I am ready to develop and strengthen the squad. It will be a challenge to raise the level without Mew Choo but we have others with potential. They can make it to the top with proper
guidance.”
The coach gained a rich experience from Indonesian coaches and has learnt different styles of coaching. He has signed a two-year contract with BAM and is confident to elevate the skill level of female shuttlers in this period.
Tat Meng joined BAM at a crucial time when there is less than a year left in three major tournaments including SEA Games, World Championships and Sudirman Cup which will take place in 2013.
