Hong Kong’s talented Singles shuttler, Wong Wing Ki, advanced into the Men’s Singles quarter-final after proving his worth against India’s young shuttler, R.M.V Gurusai Datt in their round-of-16 match at the 2011 Canada Open Grand prix, in Canada, on Thursday,
July 21, 2011.
World Number 23 in the international rankings, Wong Wing, had to dig deep into his reserves to prove his worth against Gurusai in a thrilling rubber-game battle which took 38 minutes of court time. The Hong Kong shuttler had to fight hard against the Indian
for securing the quarter-final berth in the Men’s Singles draw of the event.
In the opening game, Wong Wing cruised without ant problem from the young opponent and reached 11-5, at the one-minute break. After the interval, the Hong Kong player remained in control of the game without sparing any chance for Gurusai to fight back in
the opening set. Wong Wing clinched the opening game with the margin of 21-8, in just 11 minutes.
However, Gurusai made a surprising comeback in the second game when he played to his full speed and stunned his challenger by dominating the game in the whole set. The Indian played flawless badminton in this set, as he committed no error to lose his grip
in the game.
Wong Wing tried to employ variations in his strokes, but he failed to stop the powerful and aggressive run of the Indian and lost the game with a big difference of 13-21, in 15 minutes.
In the final set of this wonderful fight, the experienced Wong Wing utilised his tactical skills to break the momentum of his opponent and succeeded in taking good control of the match. Gurusai failed to control the pace of the bird, as he hit many strokes
into the net or outside of the court.
Wong Wing finished-off the final set with a distinctive score of 21-12, in just 12 minutes. This interesting encounter ended in three-sets of 38 minutes with the margin of 21-8, 13-21 and 21-12.
