Wong Wing Ki ousts Rei Sato in Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki booked his place in the Men’s Singles second round as he overwhelmed Japan’s Rei Sato in the first round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Richmond DC, on Wednesday, July 20.
The third seed, Wing Ki proved his worth by displaying a game of the highest standard against the emerging Japanese shuttler, Rei, who found himself helpless against the experienced opponent. The Hong Kong shuttler finished-off this Men’s Singles battle
in straight-games by working for only 22 minutes in the court.
World Number 23, Wing Ki began his match against Rei in an authoritative fashion, as he made his challenger move around in the court right from the starting points. He kept the pace high by picking the bird very early and executed powerful and fast strikes
to give less recovery time to his rival.
Rei failed to anticipate the game of his senior opponent and was not able to return the bird effectively. He made several unforced errors which helped the Hong Kong shuttler to advance in the game with relative ease. Until the break, Wing Ki was leading
the game with a margin of 11-6.
After the interval, the third seed continued his attacking run and was successful in maintaining good pressure on his opponent. Rei tried to stop the aggressive advancement of his experienced rival, but he failed completely as Wing Ki was sparing no chance
for him to get back in the match. The Hong Kong shuttler won the opening game with a dramatic margin of 21-12, by taking just 11 minutes.
In the second game, the Wing Ki continued to play positive badminton and remained ahead of Rei throughout the match. His aggressive strokes spared minimum time for the Japanese shuttler to recover to the base line.
The power-play of the Hong Kong shuttler earned him the second game with a huge margin of 21-12, in 11 minutes. This 22-minute straight-game fight ended with the score of 21-12 and 21-12.
