Wong Wing Ki upsets Chen Jin in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at German Open Grand Prix Gold 2012
Hong Kong’s talented player Wong Wing Ki created the biggest upset of the day as he defeated the former World Champion Chen Jin of China in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the German Open Grand Prix Gold 2012 in Germany, on Thursday, March 1.
Wing Ki, who is World Number 21 at the moment, delivered fabulous performance and stunned the second seed Jin, who has been positioned at number five in the world standings.
The lower ranked Wing Ki showed his impressive skills and delivered a sensational performance against Jin, who could not live up to the expectations and crashed out at the pre-quarter-final stage.
Wing Ki played to his maximum potential and finished the match in straight games by playing flawless game.
Right from the starting points, Wing Ki remained in wonderful control as he played aggressive badminton against his higher ranked Chinese opponent.
On the other hand, Jin got surprised as he received a severe treatment from his lower ranked rival and remained trailing far behind on the score board.
Wing Ki surprised the crowd with his impressive skills as he dictated the pace of rallies by playing to his maximum potential.
His smashes and net killings were impressive and he managed to take the opening game with an incredible 21-9 score on the board.
In the following set, Jin elevated his game and played competitive badminton. But he could not create any gap as his opponent was flawless in the execution of shots. Both players remained close until the break.
After the interval, Wing Ki again took over the control of rallies and started to build pressure on his higher ranked rival. Jin was clearly lacking the impressive touch in his strokes and remained struggling.
On the other hand, Wing Ki maintained pressure on Jin in the concluding phase of second game and bagged it with a 21-17 score on the board.
The Hong Kong shuttler won this straight-set match with a 21-9 and 21-17 score on the board.
In the Men’s Singles quarter-final, Wing Ki will take on Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark who defeated Indonesia’s Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in another round-of-16 clash.
