  1. I think you should use BOTH like what my Dad did meaning why not leave you existing gas furnace in place as a backup emergency, then proceed with wood burning stove installation.  As long as your stove is burning and heating your home and the room temperature is above the thermostat setting, your gas furnace would not bec running and it would be your gas bill low bec your wood stove would be supplying ample heat or more.

Of course, if it did run more than you liked or say when no one was at home, just lowering temperature setting on thermostat so that your water pipes wouldn't freeze should work fine...

    Hope the Above Info Helps!

  2. mmmm

This brings back childhood memories. We had a 2 story farmhouse and a wood/coal burning furnace in the basement. Not only that but a wood cook stove/oven.

If environmental concerns allow (brown cloud) by all means it's great.I was researching awhile back about stoves and this brand seemed to be a winner.I believe you will find it will help your utility bills a bunch.

  3. It depends on the type of wood you have, but a wood stove is a lot cheaper. So it is worth it, just make sure that the wood you're getting isn't the wrong kind that will just smoke, and make sure if you ever get a wood burner that it doesn't have cracks or holes in it because that will allow more air to enter it and the fire will burn the wood faster.

  4. The only factors you have is the purchase of a chainsaw, splitter, and the time it takes to chop, store the wood, and get up in the morning to stoke and load the fire.  a wood stove also requires more expensive pierodic maintenance.  All in all you'd save money, but you'd pay a little in time and labor.

  5. Of course it would be cheaper but also more prone to catching your home on fire.I grew up with coal burning and wood burning stoves and there is a certain amount of maintenance required and proper flu setting's and then the daily job of caring out the ashes. And then lots of people have a annual chimney sweep.Good luck and enjoy the warmth and glow of the fire place.
