Question:

Wood flooring question. Please Help?

I'm installing hard wood flooring in my new place. The problem is that in my living room I have a spiral staircase that connects to the loft. There is two beams which run from the loft to the sub floor holding the stairs. The beams are welded to a square metal plate which is bolted to the floor by four bolts. The metal plate is about 6 inches on each side. I can cut the wood around the metal plate but than the plate will be exposed and be visible. The only thing I could think of is having someone fabricate a nice piece of metal covering the plate. Does anyone know any website or have any ideas that would correct this problem. I know its a little bit hard to visualize but any ideas would help. Thank you

  1. I believe you are going to have to put your flooring around it for now and later have a spacial plate made if you want it to look better

  2. measure the height of the plate and bolts cut the back off of the hard wood to fit over top of the plate then use quarter round to go around the beam.

  3. My first idea that comes to mind is to grind down the backside of the

    hardwood floor .

(so its now over the plate)

next idea is to get as close as possible then build trim to hide it

it would look a bit bulky but if done right can be beautiful

  4. Depends on the finished style of your home, but I'm thinking a pillar base type of thing...

Lowes sells a lot of column bases, pole wraps and flanges that would work I'm sure, and the link below also has pole wraps that are in half to be joined around a pole/column/pillar (in all sort of shapes like round columns, hexagons, square etc) if they aren't quite right you could use the shape as a template to have it made for you in another material?
